The Kouga Municipal area covers a fertile coastal landscape of 2133km2. The area is characterized by three main topographical regions:
- The coastal area which stretches from Van Stadens River through surfer’s paradise Jeffrey’s Bay and Oyster Bay.
- The wide fertile valleys of Gamtoos River, including the agricultural towns of Hankey and Patensie.
- As well as the largest urban area – Humansdorp.

- Kouga is one of the least developed towns along the Garden Route offering unsurpassed development opportunities. Home to the perfect wave, Kouga is a hotspot for water sports, yet has great cultural diversity, underdeveloped natural beauty and offers a tranquil relaxed family-friendly environment with easy access to modern conveniences.
- The Kouga Municipal area with a small population of 70 691 (2001) and 61 790 (1996) (source Stats SA), however it is one the fastest growing areas in the country. This is currently driven by property development, mainly residential estate developments with some commercial and industrial developments.
- There are outstanding opportunities for solitude and unrestricted recreation e.g. fishing, fun in the sun, stretches of unspoilt beaches, bird watching, safari’s and other types of natural recreation.
- Jeffreys Bay is home to the world renowned surfing spot, Supertubes; as well as the shell museum showcasing shells from across the world.
